Newton County has launched the state’s first free naloxone, an opioid reversal drug commonly known by the brand name Narcan, vending machine in an effort to combat the rising number of opioid overdoses.

Georgia has seen a steep increase in opioid-related emergencies, with over 15,000 incidents reported statewide since 2024.

Funding for the machine’s Narcan stock comes from a $196,800 grant from the Georgia Opioid Crisis Abatement Trust.

A fourth suspect, Christopher Valentine, 25, linked to a deadly bar shooting in Macon was found dead on Thursday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The shooting took place outside the Midtown Daiquiri Bar & Grill on May 18. The incident left three men dead and six others injured in what officials have described as a targeted attack.

In response to the shooting, the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office suspended the liquor license of Midtown Daiquiri Bar & Grill, citing growing safety concerns linked to multiple violent incidents at the venue.

The Trump administration has reversed a DOGE-driven decision to shut down the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) South Atlantic Water Science Center in Norcross.

The center, which monitors water quality and streamflow across the region, had faced closure as part of a broader federal plan to reduce costs by not renewing the leases for around 25 USGS facilities nationwide.

DOGE’s website previously stated that the federal government would save $1.3 million if the Norcross lease were terminated.

Critics of the original closure plan argued that the decision was not based on scientific rationale but was instead driven by lease expiration timelines.
