Article Icon 1Seven Georgians Sickened by Salmonella Outbreak

At least seven individuals in Georgia have been affected by a multi-state Salmonella outbreak linked to recalled cucumbers distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc. from April 29 to May 19.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports a total of 45 cases and 16 hospitalizations across 18 states, with no fatalities.

The recalled cucumbers were distributed to stores, restaurants, and other facilities.

The CDC advises consumers to check with retailers and restaurants over the next week to determine if purchased cucumbers are part of the recall. If uncertain, it’s safest to discard the cucumbers and sanitize any surfaces they may have contacted.

Delta Flight 1457, a Boeing 757 en route to Tampa with 193 passengers, returned to Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on Friday due to a pressurization issue.

Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people,” a Delta spokesperson said. “That is why the flight crew of Delta Flight 1457 followed established procedures and returned to Atlanta after a mechanical issue was observed during flight.

The aircraft landed safely, and all of the passengers were transferred to another plane. The cause of the mechanical problem is currently under investigation.

A similar incident occurred nearly a month ago when a Delta flight destined for California was forced to return to Atlanta for the same reason.

Article Icon 1Camilla Mayor Jailed on Felony Charges

Camilla Mayor Kelvin Owens, along with two former election officials, were arrested and jailed on felony charges for attempting to halt a local election in November 2024.

Owens declared the election canceled and closed polling places following a legal battle over the eligibility of Venterra Pollard, a city council member removed from office for not residing in Camilla, who sought to regain his seat in the election.

However, a judge intervened, appointing new voting supervisors and ordering polls to remain open until nearly 4 a.m. the following day.

All three are being held at Mitchell County Jail while awaiting a hearing on Monday.
