Article Icon 1Judge Blocks Georgia’s Social Media Age Verification Law

A federal judge has temporarily blocked Georgia’s new social media age-verification law that was set to take effect on July 1, ruling that it violates the First Amendment.

The law would have required social media platforms to verify the ages of all users and obtain explicit parental consent for those under 16.

In May, the law was challenged in a lawsuit by NetChoice, a tech industry group representing major platforms such as Facebook, Google, and TikTok. NetChoice argued that the law threatened constitutionally protected speech.

Georgia will appeal the ruling, says Kara Murray, a spokesperson for Attorney General Chris Carr.

“We will continue to defend commonsense measures that empower parents and protect our children online,” Murray said.

Jyquez Harvey, 20, who has long been on the Atlanta Police Department’s Most Wanted list, has been arrested after a two-year search.

Harvey was arrested by MARTA police and faces charges for the 2023 murder of Georgia State University student Julian Kolb, who was fatally shot outside his car while his 10-month-old daughter was in the backseat.

Harvey becomes the second suspect charged in the case. In May, police charged Blaine Stafford, 42, who was already incarcerated on an unrelated charge, in connection to the murder.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport is bracing for a significant surge in travelers as the Fourth of July holiday approaches.

From June 26 to July 7, over 4 million passengers are expected to pass through the airport. This uptick in passengers follows severe storms on Thursday, which led to nearly 800 flight delays and 37 cancellations.

To accommodate the influx, airport officials advise passengers to arrive at least 2.5 hours before their scheduled departure times.
