Article Icon 1Inactive Voters to be Removed From Voter Rolls

Georgia election officials are removing nearly 480,000 “inactive” voters—those who have moved or didn’t vote in both of the last two general elections—from the state’s rolls by the end of this summer.

Cancellation mailers are being sent to those deemed as inactive. Those who receive a notice have 40 days to respond before their voter registration is canceled.

Supporters say this purge keeps the voter list accurate and secure, while critics warn it may unfairly disenfranchise eligible voters who move frequently.

Article Icon 1Salvadoran Journalist Back In ICE Custody

Mario Guevara, a Salvadoran journalist based in Georgia, has been returned to an ICE detention center in Folkston on Thursday night where he was previously detained following his arrest in June.

On the same day, Gwinnett County dismissed separate traffic-related charges against Guevara that were filed in May. These included reckless driving, unlawful use of a telecommunications device, and ignoring traffic signs.

Guevara was arrested and charged for obstruction while covering a protest against ICE on June 14 in DeKalb County. Those charges have also been dropped.

ICE maintains that Guevara does not have permanent legal residency in the U.S., although his attorneys argue otherwise. His lawyer states that he holds a valid work permit and is in the process of obtaining a green card, a process initiated by his son, a U.S. citizen.

Article Icon 1Georgia Lender Charged for $140 Million Ponzi Scheme

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has charged Newnan-based First Liberty Building & Loan, LLC, and its founder, Edwin Brant Frost IV, with operating a Ponzi scheme that defrauded approximately 300 investors out of at least $140 million.

The SEC claims that since at least 2021, First Liberty misled about loan performance and used new investor funds to pay returns to existing investors, rather than investing them.

Frost is accused of misappropriating millions in investor funds for personal expenses, including $2.4 million in credit card payments, $335,000 with a rare coin dealer, and $230,000 on family vacations.

The charges come just weeks after the company suddenly shut down.
