Georgians Sickened in Salmonella Outbreak

Georgia has reported six cases in a nationwide salmonella outbreak linked to imported jalapeño peppers as of Thursday, health officials say. 

Health investigators traced the outbreak to jalapeños grown in Sinaloa, Mexico, and distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors. 

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the contaminated food was sent to wholesalers and restaurants, including Chipotle Mexican Grill and Qdoba, where many patients reported eating before becoming sick. 

Officials say there is no ongoing risk at Chipotle or Qdoba because both chains have removed the affected jalapeños from their restaurants.

As of Aug. 5, the CDC counts 345 salmonella cases across 27 states, with 36 hospitalizations and no deaths. The first case dates to June 19. 

  Gunshots Hit Home of Elections Official

Investigators say two men fired at least 30 rounds into the Atlanta home of Robert Sinners, the communications director for Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. 

Sinners and his fiancée were asleep inside their home on Wellington Street SW during the incident on Thursday, and neither of them were hurt. 

Officers found shell casings nearby and chased down two suspects matching witness descriptions, recovering a firearm and ammunition. Both suspects remain in custody and are facing multiple pending charges. 

It remains unclear if there was a motive for the shooting. An investigation into the incident is ongoing. 

Manatee Rescued near St. Simons Island

Crews spent two days freeing a manatee caught in fishing gear near St. Simons Island, successfully rescuing the animal in the Peach State’s first documented manatee entanglement. 

The rescue began after the manatee was spotted with a commercial crab pot and buoy line wrapped around its body, prompting a response from a team of wildlife officials.

The line was entangled around the back of the animal’s head and its right pectoral flipper, and had already cut into its skin. 

During the first day of the rescue, responders attached a satellite tracking tag and removed the anchoring trap before a storm forced rescuers off the water. Three boats came back the next day, and a team completely freed the animal.
