Article Icon 1Georgia Recovers from Hurricane Helene

Gov. Brian Kemp provided an update on the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, which has caused severe damage across all 159 counties, from Valdosta to Augusta.

He reported that 17 people have died, including a 1-month-old infant, and the number of fatalities is expected to rise.

Kemp also noted that over 1 million people in Georgia are without power, and significant damage to the state’s electrical system has led to delays in restoration. He emphasized that recovery will be a prolonged process, urging citizens to be patient as crews work to restore power.

Across the state, 11,000 shelters, drinking water sites, and food distribution centers have been established to assist survivors. Watch a video here.

Article Icon 1Republican Group Sues to Stop Hand Ballot Counts

A Republican-led group, Eternal Vigilance Action, is challenging a new Georgia rule requiring poll workers to hand-count the total number of ballots, arguing that the State Election Board is overstepping its legal authority.

The rule requires ballots to be counted by three separate poll workers until all counts match and has drawn concerns that it could cause delays and undermine confidence in election results.

Former state Rep. Scot Turner, who leads the group, said his lawsuit is motivated by constitutional principles, arguing that the unelected State Election Board shouldn’t have lawmaking authority.

Proponents of the rule argue it ensures that the number of paper ballots matches the totals recorded by voting machines and check-in systems.

Article Icon 1Falcons Beat Saints on Record-Breaking Field Goal

The Atlanta Falcons defeated the New Orleans Saints, 26-24, when Atlanta kicker Younghoe Koo drilled a 58-yard field goal in the closing seconds.

Atlanta’s record improved to 2-2, while New Orleans fell to 2-2.

On a day when Atlanta couldn’t muster an offensive touchdown, Koo’s four field goals, a muffed punt that Atlanta recovered for a touchdown, and an interception run back for a TD by linebacker Troy Anderson were enough for the victory.

Koo’s 58-yarder was the longest field goal in the history of Mercedez-Benz Stadium. Watch a video here.
