Article Icon 1 Fani Willis Defies Senate Subpoena

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis defied a subpoena compelling her to testify on Friday before a Georgia Senate committee.

The committee is investigating her for alleged improprieties in her conduct of an election interference case against former President Donald Trump.

Willis, through her attorney, has contested the legality of the subpoena and stated she would not appear until a court rules on its validity. At least three judges have recused themselves from hearing her appeal, citing conflicts of interest.

During the hearing, the committee confirmed its intention to enforce the subpoena through legal means.

Burt Jones, Georgia’s lieutenant governor, won’t face criminal charges for his role in Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election, according to a special prosecutor’s announcement.

Jones, who was a state senator at the time, was one of 16 electors who signed a document claiming Trump had won Georgia, when Joe Biden had been certified as the winner.

Special prosecutor Peter Skandalakis concluded Jones’ actions were “reasonable and not criminal in nature” and stated, “his participation in voting as an alternate elector… was a result of relying upon the advice of attorneys and legal scholars.”

Article Icon 1 Fund Ends Grant to Black Women Entrepreneurs

Fearless Fund, a venture capital group, agreed to stop a grant program for black women business owners to settle a lawsuit brought by the conservative non-profit American Alliance for Equal Rights.

The lawsuit specifically targeted the Fearless Strivers Grant Contest, which awarded $20,000 grants to black women business owners, with lawyers arguing that the program excluded other applicants based on race.

A federal appeals court in June ruled that the program likely violated a Civil War-era law barring racial discrimination in contracting.

Fearless Fund said it will continue other activities aimed at expanding economic opportunity.
