Gold Medalist Returns to Cheers

Elana Meyers Taylor returned to Douglas County for a community celebration honoring her gold medal victory in women’s monobob at the Winter Olympics in Italy.

The 41-year-old Douglasville native trailed Germany’s Laura Nolte through three runs before a dramatic final run secured her first Olympic bobsled title and her sixth career medal.

The homecoming, hosted jointly by the county, the city, and the school system, included a ceremony and a meet-and-greet with fans. Douglas County Chairman Romona Jackson Jones praised Taylor’s perseverance, calling her an inspiration.

Taylor, who now lives and trains in Texas, became the oldest woman to win individual Olympic gold and tied Bonnie Blair as the most decorated American woman in Winter Olympics history.

  Paper Ballots Put Off

Republican state lawmakers introduced a plan to require hand-marked paper ballots in elections, but said any switch would not take place until after this year.

In response, the Georgia State Election Board unanimously passed a resolution urging state lawmakers to hasten the switch, with several board members voicing frustration with GOP legislative leaders.

In 2024, the legislature passed a law banning the use of QR codes for vote tabulation, but the measure has never been funded, with Republicans divided internally over the proposed change.

First LIFE Act Case Filed

A Kingsland woman was charged with attempted murder in what is believed to be the first case of a mother prosecuted under the state’s Living Infants Fairness and Equality (LIFE) Act.

Police say the 31-year-old woman took abortion medication to end her pregnancy after about 22 to 24 weeks. When abdominal pains developed, she went to the Camden County emergency room, where doctors delivered a baby girl who lived approximately two hours.

Kingsland Police filed the charge on March 4 after reviewing hospital records and blood work. The woman remains in Camden County jail awaiting arraignment.

In 2019, Georgia passed a law that prohibits most abortions after a detectable human heartbeat (around six weeks), with exceptions made for medical emergencies and in cases of rape or incest.
