Article Icon 1 State Income Tax in Focus

Georgia lawmakers pushing to eliminate the state income tax say their goal is to put a proposal before the state legislature next year.

This month, Lt. Gov. Burt Jones created a state senate committee tasked with delivering a state income tax proposal ahead of next year’s legislative session.

The chair of the panel, State Sen. Blake Tillery, R-Vidalia, said the group will work quickly to identify ways to boost economic freedom without gutting core services, such as schools.

Critics say a shift away from income taxes may lead to higher sales taxes.

Article Icon 1 Father Drowns Off Hilton Head Island

A 49-year-old father from Georgia drowned after getting caught in a rip current while swimming with his son last week off Hilton Head Island, South Carolina.

Emergency crews responded near South Sea Pines Drive and pulled the father and son from the water. The son survived without injury, but the father was unresponsive.

Authorities say the two were swept up suddenly, highlighting the ongoing risks associated with swimming in the ocean along the Atlantic coast.

Hooters closed two more Georgia restaurants, one near Atlanta’s Cumberland Mall and another in Augusta, amid ongoing financial trouble.

The Augusta location was a popular spot for golfers and golf fans during Masters week at Augusta National, with major champion John Daly often hanging out at the restaurant.

The closures are part of a broader shake-up as the Atlanta-based chain shifts toward a franchise-only model. At least six Georgia locations have shut down since June.

You can find a list of Hooters locations that remain open here.

Dear Georgia Flyover Reader,

There’s never been a more important time to support The Georgia Flyover.

We’ve got a big announcement coming in a week, and I think you’re going to love it.

In fact, this is the last time we’ll ask for your direct support for a while.

Why?

I can’t say yet, but I can tell you that we could use a boost heading into the announcement. The Flyover family of email publications has grown from a scrappy startup to a new force in the news media landscape, and that’s all because of your support. Now, we’re ready to take things to the next level.

If you’d like to give directly to the news source that’s truly unbiased—that’s for you instead of against you, as the mainstream media typically is—this is your last chance for quite a while.

I can’t wait for you to find out about our plans for the future (look for a special message from our founder next Monday), and I would very much appreciate your donation today.
