A judge sentenced ex-Buchanan mayor and former Georgia State Patrol trooper A.J. Scott to 10 years in prison plus 10 years on probation for a 2015 crash that killed two teenage girls and seriously injured two others.

The sentencing took place on the 10th anniversary of the victims’ funerals, with emotional testimony provided by their families. Scott released a letter apologizing to the victims’ families.

Prosecutors said Scott, a state trooper at the time, was driving 90 mph without lights or sirens when he hit a car carrying the four teens. In August, a Carroll County jury convicted him of vehicular homicide and serious injury by vehicle.

The Museum of Aviation in Warner Robins and the Ocmulgee Mounds National Historic Site in Macon said they will not reopen until after the partial federal shutdown ends.

In Atlanta, more than half of the workers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention were furloughed pending a resolution of the congressional budget dispute.

Furloughed workers will receive back pay at the end of the shutdown, and the state labor department released a guide on how they can apply for jobless benefits in the interim.

Article Icon 1Focus Shifting to Braves’ Manager Search

The Atlanta Braves continued to celebrate the successes of outgoing manager Brian Snitker while the sports world began turning its attention to who will succeed him.

Early candidates to manage the team include Walt Weiss, David Ross, and Mark DeRosa, according to one analyst.

The Braves on Wednesday announced Snitker, 69, who led the team to the 2021 World Series title, will become a team adviser after a decade in the dugout and 49 years with the organization.

“Honestly, I never thought I’d manage one day in the major leagues, let alone 10 years… I never thought I’d ever hoist a trophy or be around a group of guys that makes this so special,” Snitker said.
