Article Icon 1Kemp Visits South Korea

Gov. Brian Kemp arrived in South Korea for a trade visit marking 40 years of economic ties between Georgia and the Asian nation.

The governor and state economic development commission member Pat Wilson are part of a delegation set to meet with Korean industry executives and attend a ceremony marking the longtime economic partnership.

South Korea is Georgia’s third-largest trading partner, with $17.5 billion in commerce last year. Wilson called Korean companies “partners, job creators, friends, and good neighbors” who help drive innovation and growth in Georgia.

The visit comes as South Korea-based Hyundai moves ahead with a $2.7 billion expansion of its electric vehicle plant in Ellabell. Hyundai leaders said a Sept. 4 immigration raid at the plant would not cause the company to abandon the expansion.

Scott Nelson, the brother of the man accused of threatening to shoot up Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, said family members are glad they acted quickly to alert authorities before tragedy struck.

“We were just trying to stop something before it got worse. He’s never hurt anybody. I’m shocked that he went to the airport,” Nelson said.

Cartersville police credited the family’s actions and teamwork among multiple police agencies for stopping the possible shooting within about 20 minutes after the family contacted them.

The relatives of 49‑year‑old Billy Joe Cagle of Cartersville promptly notified local police after seeing Cagle livestream threats to “shoot up” the airport. Cagle also allegedly threatened to “shoot some cars” on his drive to the airport.

Article Icon 1Yellow Jackets Seek to Tune Out Buzz

No. 7 Georgia Tech football returns to Bobby Dodd Stadium on Saturday for a homecoming week game against Syracuse, riding its best start since 1966.

The excitement over the undefeated Yellow Jackets has led to a 24% jump in this year’s ticket sales from a year ago.

Head coach Brent Key said the team isn’t letting the hoopla distract them. “Homecoming, all that stuff, that’s for the fans. It has nothing to do with the football game,” he said.

Another win would keep Georgia Tech on a path to making the 12-team College Football Playoff.
