Article Icon 1Judge Blocks Latest CDC Layoffs

A federal judge temporarily blocked the latest round of layoffs at the Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The layoffs took place this past weekend, with a White House spokesman saying they were “a direct consequence of the Democrat-led government shutdown.”

The layoffs involved about 1,000 workers across the agency and came amid the larger backdrop of the federal government’s downsizing of many departments and agencies.

A union representing CDC workers estimated roughly 3,000 of the agency’s 13,000 workers have received layoff notices since the start of the year.
