Founding Documents Coming
Atlanta will host a visit by the Freedom Plane National Tour starting this month, one of eight U.S. cities chosen for the America 250 event showcasing founding-era documents from the National Archives.
Starting March 27, the Atlanta History Center will offer 16 days of free admission to view the documents. Their arrival on the commemorative Boeing 737 Freedom Plane will be celebrated at a March 23 ceremony at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
The nine documents include an engraving of the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Association, the Treaty of Paris, a rare draft Constitution, and the vote tally from the Constitutional Convention.
The exhibition’s stop in Atlanta is part of the history center’s 100th anniversary, which will include an Atlanta in 100 Objects exhibit in April and a major Civil War-era exhibition opening in July.
Meanwhile, the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation released more details on its yearlong Georgia250 statewide events, including a video series and author talks in Atlanta and Macon.
