Article Icon 1Gas Prices Spike

Gas prices in Georgia are climbing as the conflict with Iran disrupts global oil supply, with the state seeing one of the biggest increases in the country.

GasBuddy chief analyst Patrick De Haan said prices in Atlanta jumped about 41 cents in a week, pushing the average to about $3.20, its highest level since 2024.

The increase comes amid the Iran conflict and a supply bottleneck created by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow shipping lane that about 20% of the world’s oil goes through.

Article Icon 1Dems Reject Property Tax Rollback

Republican state House members’ plan to lower property tax rates fell short as all but one Democrat voted against the measure, leaving the proposed constitutional amendment short of the two-thirds majority needed.

The proposal sought to reduce property taxes on primary homes by lowering assessment rates over 10 years, down to 10% of fair-market value from 40%. The measure is separate from the one-time property tax rebate Gov. Brian Kemp signed into law this week.

Republicans said they supported the measure as a benefit to taxpayers and a way to help people afford to stay in their homes, while opponents called the plan an election-year gimmick that would lock a risky tax restructure into the state constitution.

Article Icon 1Founding Documents Coming

Atlanta will host a visit by the Freedom Plane National Tour starting this month, one of eight U.S. cities chosen for the America 250 event showcasing founding-era documents from the National Archives.

Starting March 27, the Atlanta History Center will offer 16 days of free admission to view the documents. Their arrival on the commemorative Boeing 737 Freedom Plane will be celebrated at a March 23 ceremony at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

The nine documents include an engraving of the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of Association, the Treaty of Paris, a rare draft Constitution, and the vote tally from the Constitutional Convention.

The exhibition’s stop in Atlanta is part of the history center’s 100th anniversary, which will include an Atlanta in 100 Objects exhibit in April and a major Civil War-era exhibition opening in July.

Meanwhile, the Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation released more details on its yearlong Georgia250 statewide events, including a video series and author talks in Atlanta and Macon.
