The Tellus Science Museum in Cartersville is examining a rare stony meteorite from a meteor that lit up Georgia skies and rattled windows with a sonic boom last week.

The 3-foot object broke apart over Newton County, and a meteorite hunter recovered a fragment.

Believed to be billions of years old, the specimen offers scientists a glimpse into the early solar system. It will be cataloged and displayed by the end of summer.

The only 2025 bill referencing balloons pertains to hot air balloon rides in Cleveland, Ga. While Florida enacted a ban in 2024 and Georgia banned sky lanterns in 2015, helium balloon releases remain legal statewide.
