Article Icon 1Soldiers Honored for Subduing Shooter

Army Secretary Dan Driscoll on Thursday presented medals to the soldiers who tackled the Fort Stewart shooter and provided care to the injured.

The suspect, U.S. Army Sgt. Quornelius Radford, 28, targeted soldiers he worked with using a personal handgun, authorities said. A motive has not been disclosed.

All five wounded soldiers are expected to recover. Georgia leaders offered words of support for those impacted by the shootings.

In May, Radford, a logistics sergeant from Jacksonville, Florida, was arrested on suspicion of DUI in Liberty County. Base leaders said they were not immediately aware of any other disciplinary issues involving him.

  Article Icon 1 Feds Green Light Loan for Georgia 400 Widening

The U.S. Department of Transportation approved a loan to help fund the addition of express lanes on a 16-mile stretch of Georgia 400 from MARTA’s North Springs Station in Fulton County to Exit 12 in Forsyth County.

The added toll lanes will be open to Peach Pass users, aiming to save commuters an average of 15 minutes a day. Completion of the project is expected by 2031.

In another road improvement project, Macon leaders detailed a $44 million push to repave 160 miles of roads next year.

Michael Thurmond, former DeKalb County CEO and three-term state labor commissioner, launched his campaign for governor on Wednesday.

Thurmond enters a crowded Democratic field, aiming to break Republicans’ long hold on the office.

The 72-year-old said he will campaign as a unifier focused on cost-of-living issues, healthcare access, and pragmatic leadership, noting his long resume and his record as the lone Democrat in the race with a statewide election win under his belt.
