DNR Sergeant Dies on Duty

Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Sgt. Ben Cunningham died on duty in Rome Thursday after experiencing a possible medical episode while participating in a fitness program.

He joined the Wildlife Resources Division in August 1999, moved to DNR Law Enforcement in December 2006, and became sergeant in March 2021.

Throughout his 27-year career with the department, Cunningham held several roles, including supervising game wardens responsible for multiple counties across northwest Georgia and teaching cadets at the Game Warden Academy as an instructor.

“Our state and the Department of Natural Resources he devoted his career to have suffered a great loss,” Gov. Brian Kemp wrote on social media. “We send our deepest condolences to his family, friends, and the entire DNR community.”

Atlanta Expands Paid Parental Leave

The Atlanta City Council unanimously voted to give city employees 12 weeks of paid leave for a new child, the first change to the policy in 11 years.

The ordinance takes effect Jan. 1, 2027. It lifts coverage from six weeks to 12.

Under the current policy, secondary city-employed caregivers are limited to two weeks of paid leave. With the new ordinance, primary and secondary caregivers will be able to take 12 weeks of paid leave and use it in increments throughout the year instead of taking the full leave period consecutively.

The new policy applies to biological parents and caregivers who adopt or foster a child under 18.

Savannah Unveils Indoor Football League Team

Savannah’s new Indoor Football League franchise announced its name Thursday: the Savannah Leprechauns.

George Mathis, the club’s CEO and president, estimates the franchise could generate $8 million to $10 million annually in economic impact for the community.

The club also introduced their first player acquisition, defensive lineman Tony Roundtree Jr., a Savannah State alum.

The team will officially make their debut at Savannah’s Enmarket Arena against the Athens Crush, Georgia’s other expansion club, on March 18, 2027.
