Pirelli Plans $1.2B Expansion

Tire maker Pirelli will create 1,000 jobs through a $1.2 billion expansion of its Rome facility, Gov. Brian Kemp announced Tuesday.

The two-phase project will begin with advanced robotics, followed by traditional manufacturing requiring more hiring. The bulk of the hiring will start in 2029, with full operations expected by 2033.

The Italian tire maker opened its U.S. headquarters and factory in Rome in 2002 and currently employs 234 people. The new jobs would bring its workforce to about 1,230.

Kemp met Pirelli executives during a 2024 economic mission to Italy, laying the groundwork for the deal.

  Metro Atlanta Leads Eviction Filings

Metro Atlanta landlords filed about 144,000 evictions last year, giving the region the nation’s highest eviction filing rate, according to Princeton University’s Eviction Lab.

About one in four renter households across Cobb, Clayton, DeKalb, Fulton, and Gwinnett counties faced an eviction filing, triple the national average, and the region logged more filings than New York City.

Researchers said filings move more quickly and cheaply in Georgia, where landlords need to give only three days’ notice. Fifteen percent of cases came from just 100 buildings.

Earlier this month, Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens announced a two-year microloan pilot offering interest-free $500 loans to help renters stay housed.

Sumo League Set for Debut

Atlanta-based Sumo Championship League will host its first event Oct. 10 in Texas, featuring a lineup that includes Georgia wrestlers.

The league’s inaugural roster features 45 wrestlers from nine countries, including six athletes from Decatur, Hampton, Villa Rica, Dallas, Carrollton, and Elberton.

Chairman and CEO Stuart Snyder, a former Turner Broadcasting executive, said the league plans monthly touring events with a season-long points system modeled on golf and Formula 1.

Sumo has roughly 1,500 years of history in Japan, and Snyder said the new league will focus on family-friendly shows for American audiences. A Georgia date has not been announced.
