First Governor Debate Set

Republican Rick Jackson and Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms will meet in a live town hall debate on Oct. 6, their only debate scheduled so far.

The one-hour event at Assembly Studios will let undecided voters question the candidates directly. The debate will air statewide at 8 p.m. on Gray Media television stations across Georgia.

Bottoms has proposed a series of six debates around the state, including stops in Macon and Savannah. Jackson has committed only to the October event thus far.

Woman Missing After Nepal-Tibet Floods

A Cherokee County woman is among the thousands reported missing after catastrophic flash floods and landslides struck Nepal and Tibet last week.

Mary Sorensen traveled on a pilgrimage to Mount Kailash earlier this month, and her family last heard from her the day before a glacial collapse triggered the disaster.

The death toll across Nepal and Tibet surpassed 900, with more than 4,700 people still missing, including at least 85 Americans.

The Nepalese Cultural Center of Atlanta held a candlelight vigil for the victims, and officials have shared resources for reaching loved ones in the region.

Colleges Kick Off Season

Major college football returns in full force this week in the Peach State, including a key early matchup for Georgia Tech and Georgia’s home opener.

Georgia Tech will host Deion Sanders and Colorado at 8 p.m. Thursday on ESPN, one year after the Yellow Jackets beat the Buffaloes 27-20 in Boulder.

No. 3 Georgia welcomes Tennessee State at 3 p.m. Saturday, with the Bulldogs heavy favorites against the FCS-level Tigers. SEC Network+ and ESPN+ will televise the game.

Georgia is home to seven NCAA Division I football programs: FBS programs Georgia, Georgia Tech, Georgia Southern, Georgia State and Kennesaw State, plus FCS programs Mercer and West Georgia.
