Four Measles Cases Linked to Daycare

Four children have contracted measles in an outbreak tied to a metro Atlanta daycare, the Georgia Department of Public Health said Friday.

All four children had been in close contact with someone who tested positive the previous week, and the state said each child was “either unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated.” Officials are trying to determine whether other people may have been exposed to the virus.

The state has not named the daycare. The Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning said it is working with the center and public health officials on the response.

Georgia has now confirmed 11 measles cases in 2026, surpassing last year’s total of 10.

Georgia Permits Early Arrival of Winter Gas

In an effort to ease gas prices, Georgia is allowing winter-grade gasoline to be sold starting Sept. 1, about two weeks earlier than federal rules normally allow.

Georgia adopted a federal waiver the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) issued Aug. 20 to address what the agency called “extreme and unusual fuel supply circumstances.” It runs through Sept. 15 and expands ethanol access while accelerating the shift away from summer-grade gasoline.

The EPA estimates the early switch could add hundreds of thousands of barrels a day to the national gasoline supply.

As of Aug. 28, Georgians were paying an average of about $3.80 a gallon, below the national average of roughly $4.09, according to AAA.

Invasive Pest Detected in Georgia

The Georgia Department of Agriculture has confirmed the state’s first pasture mealybug, an invasive insect that damages and kills grass.

University of Georgia entomology partners notified officials on July 27 of a possible infestation on weeds and grass at a Decatur County turfgrass business. The USDA confirmed the finding through testing Aug. 5.

Signs of an infestation can appear within a week and include discolored leaves, hindered growth, and underdeveloped root systems.

Commissioner Tyler Harper called the insect “a serious threat to Georgia agriculture.” Officials are urging farmers to limit pasture traffic, sanitize equipment, and wear different clothes and shoes when moving between fields or farms.
