County Aims for Zero Property Taxes

Effingham County officials said a proposed OpenAI data center could deliver about 6 mills of property tax relief this year, part of the county’s Zero Tax push.

The county’s proposed Project Zero plan seeks to eliminate county property taxes on qualifying homesteads by 2028.

Under the first steps, the Effingham County Industrial Development Authority would suspend its 2-mill levy, fund about 2 mills of school relief, and pay the county $30 million yearly for three years. The county will consider an additional 2-mill reduction next week.

The proposed $20 billion, 1,400-acre OpenAI campus near Rincon still must clear county and state reviews before construction.

Hurricane Season Quiet So Far

The Atlantic has not produced a single hurricane this year, but forecasters warn against complacency with peak season ahead.

Last year, the season produced five hurricanes, but none made landfall in the continental U.S., a first since 2015.

This year’s absence of any hurricanes is the slowest start of the season since 2022. National Weather Service meteorologist Sam Marlow said calm winds aloft are the missing ingredient.

AccuWeather trimmed its season outlook to three to four hurricanes, including one to two major storms. Meteorologists note that up to 70% of tropical storms develop between late August and November.

Vinyl Record Fair Returns

VinylCon! returns to Yaarab Shrine Center in Atlanta this weekend for a two-day vinyl record fair billed as one of the state’s largest.

While now a niche market, vinyl record sales grew for a 19th straight year in 2025 to 46.8 million, topping $1 billion for the first time since 1983.

The traveling vinyl record fair debuted in Atlanta in February after earlier stops in Denver, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Baltimore. The February show drew collectors from across Georgia.

This weekend’s fair will feature more than 50 sellers from around the state and nation, local and national DJs, food trucks, and a full bar.
