GOP Holds Fundraising Edge

Republican candidates are outraising Democrats in most of Georgia’s state-level contests, with Rick Jackson leading Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms in the governor’s race.

Democrats have outraised Republicans in three state-level races: attorney general, secretary of state, and one of the two Public Service Commission seats.

Jackson raised $6.1 million between June 11 and July 31, nearly twice the $3.1 million Bottoms collected from May through July. Including leadership committees, the totals rise to roughly $13 million for Jackson against about $5.6 million for Bottoms.

Jackson’s campaign ended July with $4.3 million on hand, compared with $770,000 for Bottoms’ campaign.

Dangerous Heat Settles In

Dangerous heat continues across coastal, south-central, and southwest Georgia, with highs of around 100 degrees extending into next week.

The region is under an extreme heat watch from this morning through this evening, with the heat index rising to possibly 115 and a high risk of heat illness for anyone outdoors.

In west Georgia, scattered storms won’t be enough to break the heat, with rain chances fading as temperatures build through the week.

In the Savannah area, high temperatures are forecast to climb to 100 degrees by Tuesday.

Military Academy Eyes National Prominence

Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville announced a long-term plan Monday to become what school leaders call the country’s premier military leadership academy.

The boarding school, now also operating as Riverside Preparatory Academy, said the multiyear transformation will focus first on strengthening academics, faculty, enrollment, and campus life.

Leading the effort is Nizar Zakka, a 1985 Riverside graduate recently named president and chairman of the board of trustees.

Over time, the academy plans to explore licensing its name and educational model to select international partners, with Gainesville remaining its flagship campus.
