Ben Jones Remembered

Ben Jones, who played mechanic Cooter Davenport on The Dukes of Hazzard before representing Georgia in Congress from 1989 to 1993, died Sunday at 84.

His wife, Alma Viator, announced the death, saying Jones suffered a heart attack at their home in Washington, Virginia, while sitting in front of the TV “waiting for the Braves to come on and whoop the Yankees.”

Tom Wopat paid tribute to his Dukes co-star, saying “Ben Jones was a fine friend and a fierce advocate of all the best things we can offer in the entertainment business. He will be sorely missed.”

Jones moved to Atlanta in 1969 and appeared in 141 episodes of the Georgia-set CBS series, which ran from 1979 to 1985. He won Georgia’s 4th District seat in 1988 and served two terms before his district was eliminated in redistricting. In 1994, he challenged Newt Gingrich in the 6th District and lost.

$17.5M Pandemic Fraud Detailed

Four Georgia men who were sentenced to federal prison last week had sought nearly $17.5 million in fraudulent pandemic relief tax credits, authorities said.

The men filed false claims for the COVID-era tax credits, chiefly the Employee Retention Credit, a program meant to keep workers on payroll, using LLCs registered in their own names.

The scheme surfaced during Operation Sweet Silence, a Columbus organized crime takedown, after large IRS bank deposits were flagged and wiretaps caught an associate discussing a 20% cut.

U.S. District Judge Clay Land handed down prison terms ranging from 41 to 115 months, plus five years of supervised release and restitution for each person.

‘Master of Disguise’ Faces Charges

Federal prosecutors said a College Park man robbed 10 metro Atlanta stores at gunpoint while dressed as a construction worker, a health care worker, and a security guard.

Media outlets dubbed the robber the “master of disguise” after the costumes helped him evade identification for months. A suspect, Tracy Daryl Mingo, 33, was arraigned Thursday on 20 counts.

Authorities said one of the costumes helped end the spree when Mingo was found putting on the same guard uniform used in a robbery the previous night and arrested.

Mingo faces a 63-year mandatory minimum if convicted on all counts.
