Siemens Plans 1,400+ Jobs

Industrial and engineering giant Siemens will create more than 1,400 jobs over the next three years at a new manufacturing facility near Pendergrass in Jackson County.

The 550,000-square-foot plant will primarily produce low-voltage electrical components for data centers. The company plans to invest at least $185 million in the project.

Construction is set to begin in November, with hiring for engineering, fabrication, assembly, and testing roles starting in 2027. Currently, Siemens employs more than 1,700 people in Georgia across two plants and six offices.

State officials visited the company’s Munich headquarters in 2025. Gov. Brian Kemp noted the 140-year relationship between Siemens and Georgia.

Panel Begins Ballot Overhaul

The state’s new election standards committee held its first meeting at the state Capitol in Atlanta, starting work on a replacement for touchscreen voting machines.

The nine-member panel was created during June’s special legislative session and must recommend a system based on hand-marked paper ballots by Jan. 31, in time for the 2028 election cycle.

The committee plans to host four public hearings, beginning Sept. 3 in Atlanta. Committee co-chair and state Rep. Victor Anderson, R-Cornelia, said the group is optimistic about fulfilling its mission by building on work previously done by other legislative bodies.

State’s Oldest Lighthouse Celebrates

Georgia’s oldest and tallest lighthouse marked National Lighthouse Day on Friday with a ribbon-cutting for a new U.S. Coast Guard exhibit.

When the Tybee Island Lighthouse faced closure, the Coast Guard stepped in and operated the site until the Tybee Island Historical Society took over in 2002.

The historical society subsequently funded a $1.9 million restoration of the tower that wrapped up in August 2024. “When I was a kid, the lighthouse (was) not poorly maintained but just not as beautiful as we see it is today,” Coast Guard Lt. Edward Fisher said.

The lighthouse will host special hours with free admission and activities from 12:15 to 4:30 p.m. today.
