Special Election Set for David Scott’s Seat

Gov. Brian Kemp has called a July 28 special election to fill the 13th Congressional District seat left vacant by the death of longtime Rep. David Scott.

Scott, who held the Georgia 13th District seat for more than 23 years, died April 22 at the age of 80. His funeral was held at Elizabeth Baptist Church in Atlanta on Saturday.

Kemp issued a writ of election May 1. The winner will fill the seat for the remainder of the year.

Scott’s daughter, Marcye Scott, has signaled she will enter the race.

Georgia Claims Title of Cheapest Gas in U.S.

As of Friday, Georgia has the cheapest average gas prices in the nation at $3.80.

In March, Gov. Brian Kemp signed a gas tax suspension bill, which suspended the state’s 33-cent-per-gallon gas tax for 60 days.

Lt. Gov. Burt Jones publicly backed an extension earlier this week. Any extension would require additional action from lawmakers.

The national average gas price rose about 33 cents in a week to $4.39 per gallon on Friday, according to AAA.

Artemis Crew Gifts Boy a Spacesuit

The Artemis II crew surprised Jack Wineski, a 5-year-old aspiring astronaut from Atlanta, with a signed orange NASA spacesuit on Friday.

Wineski first captured public attention when he showed up to watch the Artemis II launch from Space View Park in Titusville, Florida, wearing an astronaut suit and declaring his love for space.

“Jack has been hugely inspired by this mission and by all of you,” Jack’s mom told the astronauts. “So thank you so much for everything you’re doing, obviously not just for Jack, but for all of humanity.”
