A bulletproof vest saved an Adairsville police officer shot in the chest during an early Thursday traffic stop involving a wanted felony suspect.

Adairsville Police Chief Mike Jones said the officer, who was treated and released from a hospital, pulled over a speeding driver near Joe Frank Harris Parkway around 1:15 a.m.

The suspect opened fire, striking the center of the officer’s chest before attempting two more shots. The officer returned fire, killing the suspect.

On Wednesday night in Woodstock, a suspect who fled from a traffic stop shot at officers and was fatally shot by the return fire. One officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Governor candidates spoke this week at a Georgia Association of Manufacturers’ forum, laying out competing economic agendas with the state’s primary election just weeks away.

Republican candidates Burt Jones, Rick Jackson, Brad Raffensperger, and Chris Carr promoted tax incentives and private-sector manufacturing growth.

Democrats Geoff Duncan, Michael Thurmond, Jason Esteves, and Derrick Jackson pushed for Medicaid expansion and expanded workforce investment programs.

Keisha Lance Bottoms, a Democrat and former Atlanta mayor, skipped the event held at The Battery Atlanta on Tuesday.

Early voting in the May 20 primary begins Monday.

Democratic National Committee officials toured Atlanta this week as the city makes its case to host the party’s 2028 national convention.

Atlanta is one of five finalist cities—alongside Boston, Chicago, Denver, and Philadelphia—competing for the convention, scheduled for Aug. 7-10, 2028.

DNC leaders were set to meet with Mayor Andre Dickens and city officials as part of their Atlanta site visit. Atlanta last hosted a Democratic convention in 1988.

Atlanta’s pitch centers on its venue infrastructure, hotel capacity, and transportation network, with Dickens expected to lead the presentation to party officials.
