Article Icon 1Kemp Weighs Stack of Bills After Session Ends

Georgia lawmakers have wrapped up this year’s session, and now Gov. Brian Kemp is left to decide the fate of a long list of passed measures. The legislature is done, but dozens of bills are still awaiting the governor’s signature or veto.

One closely watched bill on Kemp’s desk would expand Georgia’s medical marijuana program by raising THC limits and easing access for registered patients, setting up a high-interest decision in the post-session stretch.

The pile also includes environmental and land-use measures, with one report noting that Senate Bill 478—a proposal to steer more tax revenue into the state’s conservation fund—is now awaiting Kemp’s signature.

A burst pipe at the DeKalb County Jail left much of the facility without hot water Saturday, with the outage affecting housing units and repairs expected to continue into Monday. Cold water remains available, and officials said safety inside the jail has been maintained.

The pipe burst Friday night, damaging the jail’s hot water boiler system and leaving most inmates in general population housing without hot water through the weekend. Officials said the disruption does not affect meal service or medical care, which run on separate systems.

Sheriff Melody Maddox said the problem underscores the strain of operating an aging facility that requires continued attention and investment. Maintenance crews are expected to restore hot water by Monday evening.
