Article Icon 1Delta Engine Catches Fire After Takeoff

An Atlanta-bound Delta flight erupted in flames seconds after takeoff from Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Sunday night, forcing the crew to declare an emergency and turn back with 272 passengers and 14 crew members on board.

A live airport camera captured the moment the left engine on the Airbus A330-300 burst into orange fire during liftoff. A passenger said there was “a loud bang” followed by “several more bangs and sustained fire,” and that people in the rear of the cabin were “losing their cool.” Watch the video here.

The plane climbed to just 4,500 feet before turning back and landing safely within 10 minutes. Burning debris from the engine fell onto the grass near the runway, sparking a brush fire at the airport.

No injuries were reported. The incident temporarily shut down operations at one of South America’s busiest airports, causing 16 flight cancellations and delaying 145 others.

Georgia lawmakers unanimously approved a bill that would make it easier for residents to recover some of the $3.3 billion in unclaimed property held by the state.

Senate Bill 403, sponsored by state Rep. Matt Reeves, R-Duluth, and state Sen. Kay Kirkpatrick, R-Marietta, would require the Department of Revenue to proactively match tax records with unclaimed property records and send checks to owners of amounts under $500 without requiring them to file a claim.

The bill also simplifies the process for families of deceased relatives to claim property worth $7,500 or less by allowing a signed affidavit instead of a probate court order.

The measure passed the House after lawmakers removed a controversial provision that would have allowed the state to keep long-unclaimed funds, and now returns to the Senate for final approval before heading to the governor’s desk.

U.S. Soccer is opening a 200-acre, $228 million training center in Fayette County in May, giving all 27 national teams a permanent home for the first time. The men’s team will train there before heading to its World Cup base camp ahead of the Group D opener against Paraguay on June 12.

The campus features 13 grass fields, two artificial turf fields, a 115,000-square-foot indoor facility, and 20 locker rooms. Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank contributed $50 million, and the Chick-fil-A founding family donated the land near Trilith Studios, one of the largest movie production facilities outside Hollywood.

The campus was designed so younger players practice on lower fields and must look up to see the senior pitches on higher ground, fostering a culture where rising talent crosses paths with the national team.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is set for May 7, with the first event being a tournament for disabled national teams. The CEO added that the space is also open to the public for birthday parties, weddings, and Bar Mitzvahs.
