State Senate Pushes Paper Ballots

The state Senate voted 32-21 along party lines Friday to require hand-marked paper ballots statewide before the November 2026 elections.

The Senate’s move sets up a late-session showdown with the state House, which sought to delay the switch until 2028.

The Senate bill would replace the touchscreen voting machines used since 2020. Sen. Greg Dolezal, R-Cumming, said paper ballots would bring Georgia in line with two-thirds of the country.

The head of the Georgia Association of Voter Registration and Election Officials pushed back, calling the rapid timeline “irresponsible and unrealistic.”

Bill Targets Party Labels in Local Votes

The state House voted Friday to strip party labels from most local elections in the state’s five core metro Atlanta counties.

The bill now heads to Gov. Brian Kemp for his review.

The shift would impact how Fulton, DeKalb, Clayton, Cobb, and Gwinnett counties choose their district attorneys, commissioners, and tax commissioners starting in 2028. Sheriffs would be excluded.

Republicans say the measure will depoliticize local offices and promote public safety. Democrats argued Republicans want to hide behind nonpartisan labels in counties where they’ve been losing.

Braves Flip Script on 2025

Dominic Smith launched a walk-off grand slam, giving the Atlanta Braves a 6-2 win over Kansas City on Saturday and a 2-0 start to the season—a far cry from last year, when Atlanta dropped its first seven games.

Smith, who joined the roster a week earlier, connected on a 3-2 fastball from closer Carlos Estevez to send Truist Park into a frenzy.

“Just putting that narrative behind us from last year,” manager Walt Weiss said. “There’s some good mojo going already, you know, after two games.”

On Sunday, Atlanta dropped its first game of the season, losing 4-1 to Kansas City. The Braves host a three-game series with the Athletics today.
