Article Icon 1Charges Dropped in Teacher’s Death

Charges have been dismissed against five teenagers linked to the accidental death of North Hall High School teacher and coach Jason Hughes.

The decision came following a request from Hughes’ family, who said prosecution would be “counter to Jason’s lifelong dedication of investing in the lives of these children.”

According to officials, the incident occurred when the teens were throwing toilet paper across Hughes’ yard as part of a senior prank. While trying to approach the group, Hughes slipped and fell into the path of a vehicle driven by one of the teens, who was attempting to flee, and was fatally struck.

The driver was initially charged with vehicular homicide, reckless driving, criminal trespass, and littering on private property. The other four were also facing charges of criminal trespass and littering.

As of Saturday, a GoFundMe organized for Hughes’ family has raised nearly $500,000.
