Election Day Arrives for Greene’s Former Seat

Voters in the 14th Congressional District head to the polls today to pick a successor to former U.S. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene.

A crowded field of candidates will compete on a single ballot regardless of party. If no one captures a majority, a runoff between the top two vote-getters will take place on April 7.

The northwest Georgia district spans 10 counties and leans heavily Republican, but Democrats hope a splintered GOP ballot and anti-incumbent sentiment could open a narrow path. The outcome could further tighten an already slim Republican majority in the U.S. House.

Greene, R-Rome, resigned in January after criticizing President Trump and Republican congressional leaders for failing to follow an America First agenda.

  Community Mourns Teacher

The Gainesville community grieved the death of North Hall High School teacher Jason Hughes, who was killed Friday night during a teen prank gone wrong outside of his home.

Meanwhile, Hughes’ family members asked prosecutors to drop charges in the case, saying the death was an accident and Hughes would not have wanted the teens’ lives defined by the tragedy.

“This is a terrible tragedy, and our family is determined to prevent a separate tragedy from occurring, ruining the lives of these students,” Hughes’ wife, Laura, said.

Family members said Hughes, 40, a math teacher and coach, died after tripping and being struck by a pickup truck while playfully hoping to surprise teenagers toilet-papering his home.

Students, colleagues, and neighbors remembered him as a mentor and beloved member of the community. A fundraising campaign was started for the family, including the couple’s two young sons, and the school made counselors available for students.

Church Focuses on St. Patrick’s Deeds

Savannah’s Irish community gathered Sunday for the annual Celtic Cross Mass and Ceremony, a cornerstone of the city’s St. Patrick’s Day season.

“We are going to keep the Saint in St. Patrick and carry this on for generations to come,” Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Parade Grand Marshal Martin Hogan said of the event.

The event began with Mass at the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist, followed by a wreath-laying at the Celtic Cross monument in Emmet Park.

Bishop Stephen Parkes delivered a homily centered on roots and wings, urging families to honor their heritage while moving forward with confidence.

Savannah’s 202nd St. Patrick’s Day Parade will take place March 17.
