Article Icon 1Applications Open for New Med School

The University of Georgia School of Medicine began accepting applications for its inaugural class in the fall, marking a major step in training more doctors in the state.

The school expects to enroll 60 students in the first class.

“We are seeking students who are ready to help set the standard for the type of physicians we will strive to produce at the School of Medicine—collaborative, compassionate, and committed to improving health across Georgia,” Dean Shelley Nuss said.

The school, located on UGA’s Health Sciences Campus in Athens, received accreditation this month and will be based out of a $100 million building set for completion in December.

Five other medical schools are located in the state. You can see a list of them here.

Tyler Reddick won the Autotrader 400 on Sunday at EchoPark Speedway in Hampton, the first driver since 2009 to win the season’s first two NASCAR Cup Series races.

Dawsonville driver Chase Elliott placed 11th, a week after just missing out on a win at the Daytona 500 in a crash-marred finish. “Crashing like that, it’s never fun, but it’s more just processing how close you were to winning,” he said ahead of Sunday’s race.

On Saturday, Kyle Busch grabbed a win in the Craftsman Truck Series, and Sheldon Creed snapped a long run of runner-up finishes to win the O’Reilly Auto Parts Series.

Rain on Saturday washed out Cup Series qualifying and, on Sunday, fans and drivers braved cold and wind. You can see images from the race weekend here.

With the end of the Winter Olympics, coaches such as Darrel Wright in Columbus are continuing their work to prepare young athletes for future international events.

Wright, who runs a youth boxing program, is preparing athletes to compete not just regionally but on global stages, including the Youth Olympics.

In Athens, University of Georgia hockey coach John Camp will lead a U.S. All-Star junior hockey team in international competition in Europe. The team includes three Bulldogs.

Next up on the Olympics calendar is the 2028 Summer Games set for July 14-30 in Los Angeles. The 2030 Winter Games will take place Feb. 1-17 in France.
