School Weapon Detection Systems Bill Advances

A bill that would require weapon detection systems in all Georgia public schools was advanced by the House Education Committee on Thursday.

House Bill 1023 will now have until Apr. 2 to pass through the House and Senate if it is to become a state law in 2026.

If enacted, Georgia would become the first state in the U.S. to mandate weapon detectors in all public schools.

Barrow County schools installed weapons detectors at all middle and high schools in January 2025, and Gwinnett County schools plans to do the same by the end of March.

  Atlanta-Journal Constitution Announces Layoffs

The Atlanta Journal‑Constitution (AJC) announced it will lay off about 50 employees, approximately 15% of its workforce, as part of cost-cutting efforts.

Most of the affected staff will conclude their employment within 30 days and receive severance packages.

“We’ve made these difficult decisions because we believe they will best position us to continue to accelerate the AJC’s growth,” AJC President and Publisher Andrew Morse states. “We have invested heavily in our editorial, product and business teams over the last three years, and we’ve seen direct results from that investment.”

After 157 years, the newspaper published its final print edition on Dec. 31, 2025, as it moves into an all-digital format.
