Airport Tightens Focus on Safety

Security is taking center stage at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, following the past weekend’s self-inflicted shooting inside the terminal amid the holiday rush.

Police say a 59-year-old man shot himself Sunday near baggage claim. Officers and bystanders responded quickly, and airport operations were not disrupted.

Airport officials and police said they’ve increased staffing, training, and vigilance for the holidays to keep travelers moving safely.

The airport expects about 5.3 million passengers between Dec. 19 and Jan. 4, its busiest Christmas period since the pandemic.

  Escaped Inmates Caught in Florida

Three dangerous inmates who escaped the DeKalb County Jail late Sunday were captured in Broward County, Florida, after a multi-agency manhunt involving the U.S. Marshals.

Authorities said the inmates stayed together, arranged outside help, and used a Lyft rideshare to flee Georgia, later tying up and threatening the driver.

All three inmates were considered dangerous and potentially armed.

U.S. Marshals were able to track down their whereabouts in Florida. Jail officials continued to decline to release detailed information on how the trio was able to escape.
