Article Icon 1‘Beneficial’ Rain Arrives

Rain brought relief to much of drought-stricken Georgia, with parts of metro Atlanta in line to receive an inch or more of moisture. More rain is expected later this week.

Much of Georgia came into the week in a state of moderate to exceptional drought, according to the latest Drought Monitor map.

An inch of rain “would be beneficial… We will take that, thank you very much. We’ve got a 6-inch rainfall deficit for the year,” Atlanta meteorologist David Chandley said.

The rain on Tuesday mostly tapered off by midday, leaving clouds and chilly temperatures as the state marks Winter Weather Preparedness week.

An inmate considered armed and dangerous escaped from Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta on Monday, with a multicounty manhunt ongoing.

Timothy Shane, 52, whose criminal history includes drug and weapons charges, was taken to the hospital from Rockdale County after a suicide attempt.

After his escape, Shane stole two vehicles—one found crashed, and the other abandoned—and ordered an Uber ride to travel to a home in south Rockdale County.

An investigation continued into how Shane escaped from the hospital.

Article Icon 1Game On After Judge’s Ruling

The resumption of the Class 5A high school football playoffs came after the Georgia High School Association agreed to let the games proceed pending its appeal over player suspensions.

The GHSA’s decision on Monday came after the governing body initially paused the playoffs following a Hall County judge’s overturning of the suspensions, which involved players from Gainesville and Brunswick high schools.

GHSA is still appealing the judge’s decision but has agreed to resume the playoffs, with Gainesville’s game against Langston Hughes set for Friday. The winner will face Rome in the semifinals on Dec. 11, and the state title game is now set for Dec. 17.
