Article Icon 1Poll: Jones and Bottoms Frontrunners

A crowded race for governor awaits voters in the coming year, with a poll finding the early frontrunners are Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms.

The Republican field to succeed term-limited GOP Gov. Brian Kemp includes Jones, state Attorney General Chris Carr, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, Atlanta businessman Clark Dean, Ken Yasger, and Leland Olinger.

The Democratic field includes Bottoms, state Sen. Jason Esteves, and former DeKalb County administrator Michael Thurmond. Other Democratic candidates are minister Olu Brown, state Rep. Ruwa Romman, former lieutenant governor Geoff Duncan, and state Rep. Derrick Jackson.

In August, President Trump endorsed Jones, who received another boost this month when the state ethics commission sided with him over Carr on a campaign financing issue. Bottoms begins the race as the best-known of the Democratic candidates.

Article Icon 1 Cathedral Spires Restored

After nearly a year of intricate repairs, the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist in Savannah completed the restoration of its 128-year-old twin spires.

Church leaders marked the project’s end with ringing bells and a blessing.

The cathedral’s most significant restoration project in more than a century involved crews replacing rusted steel, fixing structural cracks, and making other improvements.

“Our work is mainly invisible to the public,” project site superintendent Jeff Wigger said of the restoration, performed mostly in rooms at various levels inside the spires.
