Senators’ No Vote Draws Criticism

The U.S. Senate advanced a bill to end the partial federal government shutdown, with Democratic Georgia U.S. Sens. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff voting against the measure.

Republicans accused the senators of putting party interests ahead of reopening the government, with GOP Gov. Brian Kemp directing criticism specifically at Ossoff, who is up for reelection next year.

The senators cited the absence of a guaranteed extension of Affordable Care Act subsidies as the reason for their votes.

Trump Issues Pardons over 2020 Election

President Trump pardoned allies who faced federal scrutiny over the 2020 election case in Georgia.

Among those pardoned was Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, accused of being a co-conspirator but never charged. Jones is seeking election as governor. Also pardoned were Rudy Giuliani and former Trump chief of staff Mark Meadows.

Nationally, Trump granted similar pardons to others, with the White House press secretary saying those pardoned “were persecuted and put through hell by the Biden Administration for challenging an election, which is the cornerstone of democracy.”

The pardons don’t apply to state charges, including a controversial election interference case pending in Fulton County, where a judge has given a panel until Friday to appoint a new prosecutor.

Fireball Likely Space Debris

Early risers across the South caught an unexpected light show Saturday morning, as a streaking fireball lit up the sky.

Videos captured the fiery object breaking apart as it blazed across the sky. Experts say it was likely space debris, possibly a satellite or rocket reentering Earth’s atmosphere.
