With nearly 1 in 5 Georgia students chronically absent, state lawmakers are getting ready to propose a fix.

Study committees in the state House and Senate concluded hearings this week, with policy recommendations due next month.

Areas under review include housing instability, lack of transportation, mental health struggles, and social worker staffing levels.

Earlier this year, State School Superintendent Richard Woods pledged to cut chronic absence by 50% within the next five years.

The Federal Aviation Administration will begin reducing flights at major airports in Atlanta and elsewhere if the partial federal government shutdown continues.

The FAA said up to 10% of flights could be cut starting today as a proactive safety measure amid airport staffing shortages. The cuts will impact 40 high-volume airports. See the full list here.

In Georgia, Republican and Democratic lawmakers continued to blame each other for the shutdown, with the GOP favoring a simple funding extension and Democrats seeking higher Obamacare subsidies.
