Following previous warnings made by state officials, the Georgia Department of Human Services confirmed that Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits will be unavailable starting Nov. 1, due to the ongoing federal government shutdown.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has reported insufficient funding to cover the program.

This disruption affects approximately 1.4 million people in Georgia who rely on SNAP.

As a result, food banks in Georgia are preparing for the increased demand.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has sunk a 130-foot retired barge off the state’s coast to help create an artificial reef.

This project, funded by state recreational fishing license sales and the Federal Aid in Sport Fish Restoration Act, is part of ongoing efforts to rebuild reefs along Georgia’s coast.

“Artificial reefs like this one play a critical role in supporting Georgia’s coastal fisheries,” said Paul Medders, Coastal Resources Division’s Habitat Enhancement and Restoration Unit lead. “They not only improve fish habitat but also create exciting new opportunities for anglers and divers.”

In late 2023, two retired MARTA railcars were deployed into the Atlantic Ocean by the DNR.
