Future Power Needs in Focus

Georgia Power seeks approval to add 10 gigawatts of new energy—enough to power 8 million homes—in coming years, mainly to meet growing demand from data centers.

The state Public Service Commission begins hearings this week on the utility’s $16 billion proposal, with ratepayers expected to follow the proceedings closely in the wake of six rate hikes since 2022.

Georgia Power, lawmakers, and utility regulators say they aim to make sure current and future data centers pay for the power they use.

Research groups estimate that between 100 and 200 data centers are currently operating in the state.

  Atlanta Schools’ Expansion Blocked 

The Georgia Supreme Court upheld Senate Bill 209, which preserves school district boundaries even when city boundaries shift due to annexations.

The law was passed in response to lawmakers’ desire to keep Atlanta Public Schools from automatically expanding into DeKalb County whenever the city of Atlanta annexes new property.

State Sen. Emanuel Jones, D-Decatur, who authored the 2021 law, praised the court’s decision, saying the ruling “is a clear win for DeKalb families and educators, and it brings long-overdue clarity to a complicated dispute.”

Falcons Face More Questions

The Atlanta Falcons listed quarterback Michael Penix Jr. as day-to-day with a bone bruise in his ankle, adding to the team’s question marks following its loss to San Francisco on Sunday.

The Falcons fell to 3-3, squandering a chance to build momentum in a frustrating loss that saw them score just one touchdown and fail to establish a running game.

Head coach Raheem Morris took the blame for the defense fielding only 10 players on a key third-down completion by the 49ers that led to a touchdown on the next play. “It was absolutely embarrassing. It was my fault. I’ll get it fixed,” he said.

The Falcons host the 1-6 Miami Dolphins on Sunday.
