U.S. Rep. Buddy Carter, R-St. Simons, a pharmacist, renewed his push to increase the regulation of pharmacy benefit managers at a roundtable discussion in Atlanta this week.

Also in attendance was Federal Trade Commission Chair Andrew Ferguson. Currently, the FTC is suing pharmacy benefit managers CVS Caremark, Optum Rx, and Express Scripts over insulin costs.

Carter, a candidate for U.S. Senate, contends pharmacy benefit managers—the intermediaries between insurers and drug companies—inflate drug costs and drive small pharmacies out of business.

A bill Carter introduced in July aims to block the companies from steering patients to their own affiliated pharmacies, require more spending transparency, and prevent the overcharging of Medicaid.
