Georgia Gains $20M More for Opioid Fight

Georgia will receive more than $20 million in additional funds from national settlements with eight drugmakers related to the opioid crisis, state Attorney General Chris Carr announced.

The money, part of a $710 million nationwide deal with companies that include Mylan and Indivior, will go toward treatment, prevention, and recovery services statewide.

The funding adds to the $1 billion Georgia has already secured through previous settlements. Last year, opioid overdoses claimed nearly 1,900 lives in Georgia.

Georgia also continues its law enforcement crackdown aimed at disrupting and dismantling drug cartels and violent gangs tied to the illegal distribution of fentanayl, an opioid.

  West Nile Found in Fulton County Mosquitoes

Two mosquito traps in Hapeville and northwest Atlanta tested positive for West Nile virus, according to the Fulton County Board of Health. No human cases have been reported in the area.

Health officials are working with mosquito control crews and urging residents to follow the 5 Ds of mosquito protection: avoid dusk/dawn exposure, dress in long sleeves, use DEET, drain standing water, and secure doors.

In the state’s Muscogee region, one human case of West Nile virus was confirmed this year. 

West Nile can cause fever, rash, and in severe cases, neurological illness.

Georgia Players Picked in MLB Draft

Georgia made a strong showing on the first day of the 2025 MLB Draft, held Sunday at the Coca-Cola Roxy concert venue in The Battery Atlanta as part of All-Star Week activities.

Daniel Pierce of Mill Creek High School in Hoschton topped the Peach State picks, with the shortstop going 14th overall to Tampa Bay.

Newnan High School shortstop Dax Kilby (New York Yankees), Georgia Bulldogs pitchers JT Quinn (Baltimore) and Brian Curley (Arizona), and Georgia Tech shortstop Kyle Lodise (Chicago White Sox) also heard their names called.
