Traffic, Boating Deaths Mar Holiday

Georgia’s Fourth of July weekend was marred by two boating deaths, six traffic fatalities, and injuries to dozens as of early Sunday.

State officials reported 13 boating accidents, including boat fires on Lake Lanier and Lake Nottely and the rescue of a 4-year-old girl from a capsized pontoon.

On the roads, troopers responded to 164 crashes with about 70 injured and issued 414 DUI citations.

Authorities credit life jackets and seatbelts for preventing more deaths.

  Democrats Report Campaign Cash

State Sen. Jason Esteves, D-Metro Atlanta, and former Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms have each raised roughly $1.1 million in early fundraising for Georgia’s 2026 governor’s race.

Esteves received 85% of his funds from in-state donors and boasts endorsements from labor and local officials.

Bottoms is backed by over 7,000 mostly small-dollar donors and loaned her campaign $200,000.

Their totals trailed the $2.2 million raised last year by state Attorney General Chris Carr, the only major Republican candidate who has declared so far.

Feral Hogs Target of Trapper Incentives

Feral hogs are becoming a bigger nuisance across Georgia, and the state is responding by launching a new program to trap them.

The Hog Down Awards Program offers residents a chance to win a $3,500 whole-sounder trap capable of catching entire hog groups.

The incentive program runs through June 2026, with 20 traps up for grabs.

Feral hogs damage farms and forests and carry diseases.
