Georgia’s bald eagle population is experiencing a strong resurgence decades after nearing extinction, according to a report by state wildlife officials.

A helicopter-based survey revealed 176 active bald eagle nests along the coast and southern Georgia, with about 72% of the nests successfully fledging at least one eaglet.

Twenty-five years ago, the state documented only about 55 nesting territories. Now, Georgia has consistently maintained more than 200 bald eagle nesting territories each year since 2015, including territories outside the survey area.

Coastal Georgia’s bald eagle fledging success dropped by around 30% in 2022 due to an H5N1 avian influenza outbreak and storm damage.

Georgia officially designated cornbread as its state bread and Brunswick stew as its state stew under House Bill 233, which took effect on July 1, celebrating the beloved meal’s deep roots in Southern culinary tradition.

Brunswick stew is a rich, tomato‑based Southern dish loaded with meats and vegetables, often enjoyed alongside cornbread.

The food is so iconic across the state that there’s even a large iron pot displayed on a pedestal at Mary Ross Park in Brunswick, known as the Brunswick Stew Monument, claiming to be the very vessel used to cook the first ever Brunswick stew. However, the food’s origination—whether in Georgia or Virginia—has been historically debated.

By officially recognizing staples like Brunswick stew, cornbread, and National Sugarcane Syrup Day, we celebrate the traditions that connect our communities and define our Southern heritage,” said Georgia House Representative Rick Townsend.
