Article Icon 1Fatal Police Chase Sparks Outcry

A group of lawmakers and advocates demanded change on high-speed police chases in response to a deadly chase on Monday in the Little Five Points neighborhood of Atlanta.

Cooper Schoenke, 19, was killed after a driver being chased by a Georgia State Patrol trooper ran a red light and crashed an SUV into Schoenke’s car. Witnesses say the driver was seen celebrating as she was put into an ambulance.

Gov. Brian Kemp’s office defended law enforcement, saying, “It’s shameful that anyone would seek to diminish the actions of those who caused these deaths and shift blame onto those who put their lives on the line.”

More families say they are victims of a Georgia woman serving five years in prison for forging deed transfers on homes, including one co-owned by a Macon woman who never met her.

Angela Spradley sought to exploit a loophole in Georgia law that didn’t require identification to file property deeds, allowing her to falsely claim ownership of properties around the state. In January, she was sentenced to a five-year prison term.

Officials urge homeowners to enroll in the state’s property fraud registry to receive alerts on suspicious filings.

MARTA will resume its $230 million Five Points Station renovation on May 17 after a pause for more planning.

The project will bring an open-concept canopy, expanded pedestrian access to Broad Street, a centralized bus hub, public art, community spaces, and urban agriculture.

Starting on May 17, several downtown bus routes will be rerouted as crews work to remove the station’s large concrete canopy. Starting on June 6, the station’s customer service office will temporarily relocate.
