Spring break is in full swing, and AAA reports a sharp increase in travel by Georgians. According to the group’s survey, 81% of Georgians planned to travel this year, a 48% increase from last year.

Of those traveling, 55% are headed to a beach destination, AAA says. Last week, the police chief in Panama City Beach, Florida, said the community was inundated with spring breakers from metro Atlanta.

One community expecting a surge of visitors is Tybee Island, where Orange Crush, a spring break gathering marketed primarily toward Historically Black Colleges and Universities, takes place on Saturday.

  Article Icon 1 Teen Killed in Front Yard 

An investigation continued into the fatal shooting of 14-year-old Demarrion Carter, who was approached and gunned down in his front yard on Friday night in LaGrange.

Police have yet to identify a suspect or a motive for the killing. Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to call Troup County CrimeStoppers at 706-812-1000.

Carter was a longtime member of Empowerment 3D, a youth group focused on life skills and service. His mentor, Jerome Cofield, described the teen as a quiet leader.

ESPN and Disney+ announced plans to air 10 Savannah Bananas baseball games this summer at iconic venues such as Fenway Park in Boston and Clemson’s Memorial Stadium.

The announcement came a day after the exhibition baseball team was featured on 60 Minutes after CBS’ Masters telecast. The segment focused on the team’s emergence as a national sensation, with sold-out stadium shows across the country. 

The Bananas, based out of Grayson Stadium in Savannah, recently announced the addition of two more opponents: The Firefighters and Texas Tailgaters.
